AVP social cycling calendar got off to a flying start with a ride along the Umborne Valley. Almost 20 riders turned out on a surprisingly warm Sunday morning in early January for a pleasant pedal into the countryside north of Seaton.
The group meandered its way out through Axmouth along the Axe estuary and onto National Cycle Route 2, passing the Colyford tram station and up along Cownhayne Lane to the river bridge at Colyton.

A few photo’s taken at the start of the inaugural Audax of “A Small Bit of The Great Tour”, organised by Exeter CTC and Axe Valley Pedallers. Two groups for two distances: 100km and 50km, both with some pretty tough hills!! The route takes in a bit of both the first and last stages of last year’s final stage of The Great Tour. 114 riders registered and 100 set off! |

A group of Axe Valley Pedallers travelled all the way up to South Wales to take part in the Wiggle Dragon Ride. They swopped their usual distinctive yellow and red jerseys to wear the blue and white colours of The Prostate Cancer Charity, the charity partner of the ride.
Now in order to take part in this ride, some members showed real commitment by getting up at 3.00 am, yes that’s right, 3.00 in the morning! Why so early? Well the ride started at 08.00 am and they were not alone, as over 4,000 cyclists had gathered to take part in one of the most well know sportive rides in the country, so an early start was needed with so many participants.
The Pedallers took part in either the 200km or 120km routes and they all put in some excellent times. They worked well together by riding in small groups, often in a line like a train, in order to create a slipstream effect for the riders behind.
Alistair Cope who is Chairman of the local cycle club and also a cycle consultant for the charity said “it was a brilliant turnout by members of Axe Valley Pedallers and we were all very proud to be wearing the blue and white jersey of the charity. Not only were we riding some pretty tough routes, but we also raised awareness about a disease that kills a man every hour in the UK”. Thanks to all the Axe Valley Pedallers who turned up tonight at short notice to say thanks to George Gori of Soanes Cycles of Colyton who is our main sponsor again for 2011. We also took the opportunity to officially welcome Nathan who now works with George and is one of George’s Tor 2000 riding partners.
Whilst at the Pedalabout, Bar Bunny brought out her famous cake box, packed with delightfully tasty cake and we all sang happy birthday to her! Not something you do every day on a roundabout!! |
