Axe Valley Pedallers Ride Along The ExeThis month’s AVP ride (8th March 2009) took place out of the Axe Valley and into the urban centre and cycling demonstration city of Exeter.  Our meeting place was the Honiton Road Park and Ride car park on the edge of the City close to the M5 jct 29.  Just after 11:00 am the assembled group cycled away heading ultimately for the Turf Locks on the Exeter Canal.

The ride was notable for probably 2 of the youngest AVP cyclists in the Club.  Willow (aka Basket) accompanied grandad ‘Fishnet’ via her tag-a-long and she was more than happy to let grandad do the work while she thumbed her way through a few children’s books and noting the splendid views.

‘Madal’ founder of AVP, lead the ride on his ‘fixie’ (fixed wheel bike) and we set off through the industrial estate next to the car park. Typical weather brought about a squally shower as soon as we set off!  Riding the urban cycle lanes took us past Sowton and Digby park and ride stations; Tesco and the adjacent retail park; onto the Countess Wear traffic light junction; and via the cycle/footpath that ultimately leads onto the off road cycle path bringing us into Exeter Quay. Here we met ‘66’ and ‘Nevis’ with Milly toddler no.2. Coffee and cake was taken given the rain shower and the obligatory photo call was had.

After refreshments we headed along the off road cycle path that follows the canal and takes us passed the Double Locks Pub and onto Exe Bridges (notable for the fall of ‘Grinch’ and ‘Wurzel’ on their tandem)!  Nothing broken however!
Onwards under the elevated section of the M5 resulted in Nevis and Milly retracing their steps (well done Milly!) and finally brought us to Turf Locks where drinks and lunch was taken.  This pub looks closed from the outside on a squally March weekend testimony to it not changing its external appearance over all these years but it was positively humming with life on the inside.  Suitably refreshed we began the return journey and eventually arrived back at the park and ride around 3.15pm.

A great ride and a good turn out despite the changeable weather.

Many thanks to Madal for oraganising a great ride.
