On Easter Sunday the Axe Valley Pedallers took to the Granite way in the spring sunshine for a leisurely 25 mile ride from Okehampton to Lydford and back. An early attempt by Foggie to sabotage the ride by having a clipless pedal malfunction failed despite nearly squashing ride leader, Quiff.
The Granite Way follows a former railway line resulting in a largely traffic-free and relatively flat route. The route is in quite an elevated position giving beautiful views towards Bodmin in the West and the edge of Dartmoor in the East. There are a couple of interesting features along the way: The Meldon Viaduct and the ruins of a Norman castle. A very pleasant coffee stop was enjoyed at the Lydford Waterfall cafe.
This was a very enjoyable, family-friendly ride that may be repeated in the summer. |
